Cedar Pines, Upton's municipal 9-hole golf course, opened in 1994 by a group of stakeholders who built and operated the course voluntarily. The course has been operated on a volunteer basis ever since, currently run by the Upton Golf Association.

Cedar Pines is located on Highway 116 in a beautiful setting in the Wyoming Black Hills. The course features 2,995 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 36. The course also has a driving range and putting area to master your skills.

A clubhouse with a full bar and restaurant is sure to meet any hunger and thirst desired before and after a round of golf. The Upton Golf Association hosts numerous events during the summer, including the annual Joe Haynes Memorial Golf Tournament, Kids Day, Triathlons, and more! The facility is also available for special events throughout the summer months.

The Upton Gun Club is a community group with an annual small family membership and a public outdoor range. It has a strong membership with members from Weston County and the surrounding Northeastern Wyoming area. The club emphasizes family shooting and especially developing youth shooters. All youth activities can use the range at no charge. Some youth groups that use the range are Wyoming State Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC), Weston County 4-H, Upton Young Guns, Upton Trap Cats, the outdoor education class from Upton High School as well as the Boy Scouts. There is also an indoor 22 caliber range and classroom. The outdoor range has 50 foot , 25 yard, 50 yard, 100 yard, 200 meter, 300 meter ranges. There is also have a trap range and a 5 stand shotgun course. Recently a 3d archery range was added to the outdoor range.

Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC)

The Wyoming State YHEC has used the Upton Gun Range since 2008. YHEC is open to all youths 18 and younger that have passed hunter education. Participants from all across the state and neighboring states are welcome to participate. This one-day event has grown every year. In the future it might become a 2-day event. Wyoming has sent several participants to Nationals, where Wyoming has won the Sportsmanship Award 3 times.

For 25 years, professional motorcycle riders have come to Wyoming’s Black Hills just outside Upton to test their off-road abilities on the tree-lined tracks coursing over the native rocky terrain. Upton hosts the Inyan Kara Enduro Race every year - an off-road, long-distance cross-country competition part of the Rocky Mountain Enduro Circuit.

The event brings the community together unlike anything else through the level of activity locals willingly put in to help the event. Volunteers work checkpoints or assist with track maintenance. The local school provides access to the locker room for riders to shower and allows out-of-towners to camp on the school property for the weekend. Local groups run fundraisers through breakfasts and spaghetti dinners as well. 

One of Upton’s best historical spots is the iconic Old Town, a collection of buildings and artifacts collected by Upton History and Heritage Preservation, the nonprofit organization that operates the site.

Upton History and Heritage Preservation has worked hard over the years to relocate numerous historic cabins and buildings of the area depicting the local and state historic heritage. Buildings relocated to Old Town include the Clingan cabin, Hawkins cabin, Rankin log house, Hawkins blacksmith shop, Upton's old fire hall, the Plachy ice house, Osage's "House of Ill-Repute, and Watt's water tank, barn, corral and blacksmith shop. Several wagons have also been restored and displayed on site.

The original IronTown was built in the late 1880's on this site. With the promise of the iron horse (railroad) which would carry coal, sheep and cattle to market, early settlers drove their livestock here from as far away as Montana to get them shipped to the east. The railroad was built a mile east of Iron Town, so the village quickly folded and Merino, later became Upton overnight.

The Red Onion Museum is a museum in Upton, Wyoming, which is part of a collection of museums operated by the Weston County Museum District, a non-profit organization. The Red Onion Museum hosts many events each year, such as a history fashion review, old-fashioned bike tour featuring old motorcycles and different coffee events, targeting different interests in the community.

Walter K. “Jarbo” Poulson brought fame to the name “Red Onion,” at least in the Upton Community, when he opened the “Red Onion Saloon,” which operated for several years prior to Prohibition. When Prohibition resulted in the closure of the Red Onion Saloon, Poulson simply moved his business to the barn at his “Red Onion Ranch.” As the community organized the Red Onion Museum in 1996, the historic name was again put to use.

Upton is on the western slopes of the Black Hills region teaming with wildlife and open spaces. From the Iron Creek Inn & Suites you are minutes from hunting, within 30 minutes of fishing in Keyhole or climbing Devils Tower and less than an hour from Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

For history buffs, the Black Hills region has a lot to offer. Historic Deadwood, Crazy Horse Memorial and Cluster State Park are all here.

Do you dare hike Devils Tower? It’s a strenuous climb but so worth the view and bragging rights. Plus, there are professional guides who can help you get to the top.

For those who want to explore Devils Tower without actually climbing it, you’re in luck. The Tower Trail is a popular paved hike that starts at the Visitor Center parking lot and runs for 1.3 miles. It’s ideal for families with kids and beginners. There’s also a 1 mile hike that will take you to a picnic area near the amphitheater.

Your best catch awaits you. Drive to Keyhole reservoir for crappie, perch, smallmouth bass, northern pike, drum, catfish and walleye. Bonus - you can fish all year long because ice fishing is popular here too!

Don’t have a boat? No problem. You can shore fish from Keyhole and still have an awesome day. Oh, and if you’re looking to break a record for the biggest fish, it’s possible. Keyhole is known for it. In 2018, a record-breaking drum was caught weighing in at 22.58 pounds and the record before that was from Keyhole too.

By the way this is also a fun place to swim in the summer so bring the whole family!

In search of a trophy deer or elk? You can find it in Wyoming. Big game hunting is popular in the Thunder Basin National Grassland and Upton is the perfect basecamp for a week of hunting. We even have public hunting land in town. Grouse, turkey, antelope and rabbits are just some of what you’ll find here.

If you want to bow hunt, you can do that in Upton and the Thunder Basin National Grasslands too. What makes Upton special is that you can hunt in town so if you’re coming with a first-timer who wants to start slow, they can hunt close to the Iron Creek Inn to get their bearings. Then, the next day, everyone else can head into the grasslands in search of even larger game.
